About this deal

Lyrics collects the words written for music across seventeen albums, from the first iconic Roxy album of 1972 via the masterpiece of Avalon to 2014’s reflective Avonmore, introduced by the author, and with an insightful essay by James Truman. With more and more Roxy Music tracks being added to the setlist, it was one of the factors finally convincing Ferry to reunite with his former Roxy Music colleagues. On his seminal 1973 solo album These Foolish Things he also covered ’60s hit rock songs like the Rolling Stones' “Sympathy for the Devil” and the Beatles “You Won’t See Me,” establishing something of the formula for his solo albums until the 1980s. Then the album Avalon released in 1982 with songs such ‘More Than This’ and the beautifully written ‘Avalon’ and then more closely up to date is ‘Avonmore’ the title track of the album released in 2014. I can still remember seeing the band late one night on the BBC with Bryan Ferry standing at the keyboard.

s In Your Mind was Ferry's first solo collection of completely original material; the following year's The Bride Stripped Bare, a work rumoured to be inspired by his broken romance with model Jerry Hall, split evenly between new songs and covers.Lyrics’ presents his entire body of work, including his six post-Roxy Music solo long players, the latest being 2014’s aptly titled ‘Avanmore’. Seeing the lyrics standing alone on the page in all their glory demonstrates Ferry’s immense poetic talent.

He also mentions how his fascination for the world of cinema influenced his writing, giving the example of the song ‘2HB’ (as in a pencil type) that was influenced and inspired by Humphrey Bogart’s classic film Casablanca. Bryan Ferry's Lyrics -last few remaining signed copies | 'The low points in life so often produce the most keenly felt and best loved songs. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Roxy Music's iconic first album with this collection of Bryan Ferry's evocative lyrics of aspiration and romantic longing, introduced by the author. In addition 15 August saw publication of ‘Lyrics’ a handsome, 308 page hardbound volume celebrating the songwriting talents of lead vocalist Bryan Ferry, encompassing Roxy Music’s two pre-LP singles and eight studio albums as well as Ferry’s nine solo LPs issued between 1973 and 2014, a total of 139 songs. The song was also featured in the season 5 episode “My New God” of Scrubs, and most recently, the song can be heard playing in the background, in a bar scene, in the FX series American Horror Story: Freak Show, episode 5, titled “Pink Cupcakes” (2014); as well as in the films Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015) and Exit to Eden (1994) with Dan Aykroyd and Rosie O'Donnell.

Ferry’s solo career has extended into the new millennium with a collection of Bob Dylan covers entitled Dylanesque. The lyrics begin with Roxy Music’s two pre-album singles, ‘Virginia Plain’ and ‘Pyjamarama’, before moving to the nine tracks which composed the group’s June 1972 self-titled debut album. Ferry’s unique vocal style puts a wry, sophisticated spin on the sound of the crooners of the mid 20th-century.All the classic Roxy anthems are here – ‘Virginia Plain’, ‘Do the Strand’, ‘Love is the Drug’, ‘The Thrill of it All’ – songs in which the real and the make-believe blend in a kaleidoscopic mix, shot through with cinematic allure. Also included are the evocative lyrics of romantic longing and lost illusions for which Ferry is rightly revered: ‘Slave to Love’, ‘Mother of Pearl’, ‘More Than This’.
