About this deal

It reflects the uneasy dynamic that exists in many Singapore households, where you share a living space with someone who you might say is part of the family, but who, at the end of the day, is a paid employee. Donita's friend, Flordeliza is accused of murdering her employer after being found to have tried to steal. Agent and an Interpol Detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money. I would’ve started it when that was something I was interested in; unfortunately this time, I had been looking for a book where more happened.

Corazon, Angel and Donita all have secrets that they are hiding, not just from their employers but also from each other. Spanning 400 years, this exhibition follows women on their journeys to becoming professional artists. When their friend is accused of murdering her employer, three Filipina domestic workers in Singapore start their own investigation to clear her. In simple yet evocative ways, she peels back the layers of each woman, revealing how their choices are restricted by their past predicaments and current circumstances.I enjoyed this book set in Singapore and told from the perspectives of various Filipino home workers/service workers. The final two pages brought me to near tears in relation to one of the protagonist’s journey with her grief. The audience member believes they have picked a random card, which is reinforced by the magician re-shuffling the deck several times, though this is just misdirection. Angel as a character felt unnecessary to the story overall despite the one thing she does which impacts the flimsy plot, which sucks because that’s a third of the main characters that then felt like a waste of time to read.

I loved the mixed media that Jaswal decided to include in Now You See Us, and it was a great addition on top of the different POVs. Donita: Barely out of her teens, this is Donita’s first time in Singapore, and she’s had the bad luck to be hired by the notoriously fussy Mrs.Because of how the women are treated, they realize it could happen to any of them so they go on a mission to prove their friend is innocent. When They See Us is a 2019 American crime drama television miniseries created, co-written, and directed by Ava DuVernay for Netflix, that premiered in four parts on May 31, 2019. My overall response to this book is that I didn’t enjoy it much and it wasn’t really for me, but I can absolutely see others enjoying it. Donita takes up the cause and embarks on finding out the truth, with Angel and even reluctant Cora along the trail.
