About this deal

opens well, but as soon as it moves to Markham’s mansion its action becomes a trifle stilted, Mary Germaine, as Carol, displays good looks and obvious acting ability, and William Sylvester, although a little too sure of himself, registers as Jimmy, but the rest are a very mixed bag. The story concerns a traveller who finds himself accused of murder after he receives a ride from a person who kills an extortionist. This proves to be a ride he'll never forget, when the blackmailer is killed by high-tension wires and the rider is accused of the crime. A fun little country house mystery which Maurice Elvey wrings as much style out of even though he is saddled with a hugely annoying and smug leading man in William Sylvester. Unusually, the lead female role - played here by Mary Germaine - has a much more substantial role in this mystery as they attempt to identify the murderer. Less complicated than Agatha Christie and is a lighthearted contrast with the depressing films noirs of the same period.A MATTER OF MURDER (1949) - there are no cast or crew credits on this poor old remnant of a film, but it's efficiently directed by John Gilling, who later went on to better things like the TV series, The Saint, and Hammer Horrors. The print is reasonable, despite some scratching and the occasional bleaching that seems to be a feature of Renown releases. There, they meet Markham (Alexander Gauge) and his two associates, an elderly Eastern European doctor (Hugo Schuster) and a sharp-tongued American (John Arnatt), also a Polish maid (Ingeborg von Kusserow) and a seedy, spying butler (Denis Shaw). William Sylvester plays the hitcher-cum-sleuth well and Denis Shaw is good as they nosey butler in this short-but-sweet double-crossing pot-boiler that do. Not so action packed as some gangster movies, some shooting and killing but not gory or blood thirsty, just good old fashion movie. The script is clever and witty, and we loved most of the movie, although the suspense lagged a bit towards the end.House of Blackmail is a 1953 British second feature [1] drama film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Mary Germaine, William Sylvester and Alexander Gauge. A hitchhiker becomes a murder suspect after he accepts a ride from a person who kills a blackmailer.Mary Germaine is tough but warm and attractive, and the other two actresses are also very engaging, particularly gorgeous Patricia Owens, who sadly has only a small part as a model in this, but went on to better things in the US.
