About this deal

He worked for the Sunday Times for eighteen years and covered every major conflict in his adult lifetime until the Falklands War.

When I look at some of his drawings, people are looking up for salvation, just before they’re being shot. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In a split second under fire, some people wouldn’t bother, but I’ve stood up in battles and put up the exposure meter first, because I’m not going to get killed for an underexposed negative. This new collection mixes recent with past work, showing how no one has ever been able to accuse McCullin of wielding a frivolous camera.

The morning I arrive at McCullin’s old limestone farmhouse, where he lives with his wife Catherine Fairweather, he has been up since dawn, looking out at the valley beyond his front windows to see if the sky will change. It’s a journey McCullin first made at the age of five, when he was evacuated in 1940 from his home in Finsbury Park, north London. The thing about mythology is that it’s heavily overloaded; most stories over time have been packed with embellishment. I’ve photographed dead people and I’ve photographed dying people, and people looking at me who are about to be murdered in alleyways.

McCullin has been taking landscape photographs since the 1990s, capturing scenes from across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia when not on assignment. They show a less familiar side of the world’s most renowned photojournalist, known above all for his images of war and poverty. After a career spanning sixty years, Sir Don McCullin, once a witness to conflict across the globe, has become one of the great landscape photographers of our time. McCullin has never had trouble motivating himself to work – he talks of photography choosing him, rather than the other way round – but just recently, he says, he has found his mind beginning to drift. The finest British photojournalist of his generation, he has received many honours and awards including a CBE. After a career documenting conflict for over sixty years, iconic war photographer Don McCullin now focuses on documenting the landscape. Regarded as one of the most accomplished war photographers of recent times, McCullin explains, ‘I’ve been to hundreds of places in the world, all over the globe, and it all comes back to here.
