About this deal

The Vibes earplugs promise to “lower volume to more comfortable levels, while still allowing you to hear your environment with clarity. I can't wear ear defenders or ear plugs because they make me feel disoriented, like I am under water. I feel duty bound to mention these Swedish plugs since they are so highly rated by dedicated users, but I couldn’t get on with them. A moderately loud dog bark sends my pulse racing, and the steady rumble of a traffic jam wipes me out as if I’d ran the highway home, not driven it.

Reusable silicone earplugs, which you wash in cold water between uses, are lighter and more comfortable. Eating sounds, heavy breathing and even the sounds of coughing and sniffing can significantly trigger my misophonia, especially when in close-quarter environments and combined with clanging cutlery. These work similarly to the Quies plugs but, being made of sticky silicon rather than wax, they cleave more tightly to your ear. They also, mostly, delivered on their promise of reducing some louder sounds whilst allowing me to hear others. I wore them on the tube into central London and really liked being able to adjust the settings as I moved around – mostly switching between settings 2 and 3.

Overall, Flare Audio’s Calmer buds proved to be a decent solution to my sound-sensitivity woes and are well worth considering as a potential means of reducing stress.Although setting 4 meets a hearing protection standard, there’s not much detail available about the technical build of the Knops or the pipe design inside. This is still the best and cheapest way to give the most attenuation with an earplug, but it works much better the higher the frequency. I was interested in whether I’d get the same reduction in noise with other high-fidelity earplugs or even foam earplugs with a hole in them. Silicone is slightly less dense than wax, so it doesn’t block quite as much sound, but they’re soft enough to wear all night and certainly don’t fall out, unless you’ve worn them too many times and got them covered in fluff. They are a nice idea, and I hope the science that is quoted is accurate for the benefit of those they target to help.
