About this deal

There are many black politicians mentioned, which is great, but only the politicians of one particular party seem to get a mention. Mary Seacole was adopted by the Royal College of Nursing and was given the same status as Florence Nightingale. I finished this book having celebrated the lives of these women and men, and I am also inspired and encouraged.

Great Black Britons is a poll that was first undertaken in 2003 to vote for and celebrate the greatest Black Britons of all time. People can read about the individuals, particularly the historical figures and say: ‘There must be more, of course there’s more, I would like to learn more about those people’. He quickly became a trade union official, and moved into politics, becoming a Labour councillor in the London Borough of Haringey in 1978. Patrick has recently co-authored a book honouring the huge achievements of Black British people throughout history. In the introduction, the author outlines the need to recognise Black contributions, how this list came about, and the criteria for nomination. All but one will be presented as 'blended events'- meaning they will take place in our lecture hall in front of a live audience, while at the same time being streamed to those joining us online.

Patrick was awarded an OBE in 2012 for his work in tackling health inequalities for ethnic minority communities in Britain. In 2018 he received an honorary PhD from Wolverhampton University and was selected as one of the 1000 Progressive Londoner by the Evening Standard. A long-overdue book honouring the remarkable achievements of key Black British individuals over many centuries, in collaboration with the 100 Great Black Britons campaign founded and run by Patrick Vernon OBE. This is a great introductory reference source to those listed for further study and other resources available for corrections to our shared history of these Isles. If you are not black this is a good book to acquaint yourself with the figures who you may or may not have heard about.Alongside renowned and barrier-breaking Black artists, actors, musicians and politicians, Patrick Vernon and Angelina Osborne tell the stories of less well known or forgotten Black Britons, unravelling the pernicious myth that there is no Black British historical past.

Since 2010 he has been leading the campaign for Windrush Day and in 2018 kick-started the campaign for an amnesty for the Windrush Generation as part of the Windrush Scandal which led to a government U-turn in immigration policy. Courtney Pine, CBE (born 18 March 1964 in London) is a British jazz musician, who was the principal founder in the 1980s of the black British band the Jazz Warriors. The response was incredible, resulting in a number of Black historical figures being included on the national school curriculum and having statues and memorials erected and blue plaques put up in their honour. Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey, DBE ( /ˈbæsi/; born 8 January 1937) is a Welsh singer whose career began in the mid-1950s, and is well known both for her powerful voice and for recording the theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979). Grant was born in Georgetown, British Guiana, to schoolteacher parents, who in 1963 took up the UK Government's offer to people from the crown colonies to settle in the UK.The poll and campaign was re-launched to celebrate and tackle the invisibility of Black people's achievements and contributions in the UK. If you are talking about individual achievements, in the book we are celebrating people that we covered back in 2003-04, but there are new heroes that have been recognised – Lewis Hamilton wasn’t around in 2003-04, neither was Stormzy.
